Staircases

Stringers, treads and risers in solid oak. We make them from the same timber as the floor so the two meet without a seam — the staircase reads as part of the house, not as an addition.

Why us…

Stairs you will be proud of

A beautiful staircase has to belong to the space and serve well at every step. That is why we give attention to each step on its own.

When we make both the floor and the stairs, we take the timber from one cut. The staircase then matches the floor in tone and grain. Otherwise the transition shows at first glance — and there is nothing to be done about it later.

  • From the same batch as the floor When we do both, the timber comes from one cut. The staircase then matches the floor in tone and grain.
  • Cladding or a new structure We clad a concrete staircase or build a whole new one including the balustrade. With cladding the step height changes by a few millimetres; we allow for that at the survey.
  • Anti-slip without metal strips We rout grooves into the nosing. It solves the grip and is not as visible as a screwed-on strip.
  • We fix the squeak too A squeaking staircase is almost always the joint, not the wood. So we level and glue the substrate rather than only screwing it down.

Oak staircases in family houses and historic buildings.

How it works

01

Measuring step by step

One dimension is not enough for a staircase. We measure every step separately — building staircases differ by a few millimetres.

02

Templates

We take a template from every step. Without it, gaps would be left at the curved and bottom steps.

03

Quote

Priced by the number of steps, the shape and whether a balustrade is included.

04

Manufacture

Eight to ten weeks. A staircase is more work than a floor because almost every piece is different.

05

Fitting

Two to three days depending on scope. The staircase is walkable straight after fitting.

FAQ

Do the stairs have to be in the same timber as the floor?

They do not, but we recommend it. When both come from one batch, tone and grain carry over and the transition between the floor and the first step does not show. Buying them separately tells above all after a few years, when the timber darkens naturally.

Can an existing concrete staircase be clad?

Yes, it is the most common brief. We take a template from every step, because a building staircase commonly varies by a few millimetres. Risers and landings are treated as one piece with the adjoining floor.

How long do manufacture and fitting take?

Allow six to ten weeks from survey to handover, depending on the scope. The fitting itself takes two to three days for an ordinary staircase.

Will the stairs be slippery?

The finish has appropriate slip resistance and the nosing edge is rounded. For demanding premises we add anti-slip grooves or strips.
